Gasoline Port Fuel Injection

Function

With the Gasoline Port Fuel Injection system, the air-fuel mixture is formed outside the engine cylinder in the intake manifold. The injector sprays the fuel towards the intake valve. During the intake stroke, the downwards moving piston draws in the Air/Fuel mixture past the open intake valve and into the combustion chamber.

The injectors are so dimensioned that the engine's fuel requirements are always complied with, irrespective of load or engine speed.

Air management

A variety of factors influence the air mass in the cylinder:

Air temperature:
The lower the air temperature, the higher is the airmass. This leads to some engines using an intercooler.
Air pressure:
At high altitudes the air pressure drops and together with it the air mass drawn in by the pistons. The injected fuel quantity must therefore be reduced accordingly.

Turbocharging

The exhaust-gas turbocharger uses the energy of the exhaust gas to compress the aspired air. In this way the engine is supplied with a greater air mass into which a correspondingly larger amount of fuel can be injected. Engine performance and maximum torque – relative to the piston displacement volume – are increased.

Turbocharging is the precondition for downsizing: reducing the piston displacement volume while retaining the same engine performance. This will result in engines with lower fuel consumption and correspondingly reduced CO2 output.

Bosch develops and manufactures turbochargers within the joint venture Bosch Mahle Turbo Systems.

Ignition

The static high-voltage ignition distribution is not activated mechanically, but by a fully electronic system. Ignition-voltage distribution is therefore free from wear and tear. The ignition timing can be adjusted within a broad range of settings. Ignition coils and long-life spark plugs from Bosch ensure reliable ignition of the A/F mixture with an ignition voltage of up to 35,000 volt.

In order to keep in line with the increasingly severe emissions regulations, it is not enough to make the combustion as clean as possible. In addition an exhaust-gas treatment is required.

Our solutions for emissions reduction are very efficient: In some big cities the treated exhaust gas is cleaner than the surrounding air.

Transmission technology

We develop components and modules for modern automated transmissions and enable a high driving comfort by fast and smooth gearshifts, at lowest fuel consumption and emissions.

We supply the electronic and hydraulic components for the control of automated step transmissions (AT), continuously variable transmissions (CVT), double clutch transmissions (DCT) as well as automated manual transmissions (AMT).

We develop and create innovative concepts for CVT transmissions and produce the push belts for the torque transmission.

Innovative construction: for universal use

The great extent of their functions and performance are convincing features of Start/Stop Starter Motors from Bosch. They are suitable for use in an extremely wide variety of vehicles: with gasoline or diesel engines and with manual or automatic transmission. Due to their compact dimensions, they are as easy to install in the vehicle as a conventional starter motor.

Robust technology: for a vehicle’s entire life

The number of starting operations performed by the starter motor, its lifetime in other words, has been considerably increased for this special application. Greater design strength has enabled the starter motor to survive the more frequent starts throughout the lifetime of the vehicle without suffering damage.

The following measures have been undertaken:

Start/stop system

Reduce CO₂, save fuel and costs – automatically and without changing your usual driving style? Bosch makes it possible. With a technically mature, very effective and at the same time cost-favorable solution: the start/stop starter motor for use in start/stop systems. Suitable for vehicles with manual or automatic transmission, particularly efficient in the “stop-and-go” conditions of dense urban traffic.

Economical driving and clean stops

The operating principle of the start/stop system is as simple as it is efficient: when the vehicle comes to a stop, the engine is automatically switched off. To drive off again, all you need to do is to activate the clutch or, in the case of vehicles with automatic transmission, take your foot off the brake pedal to restart the engine.

An investment that quickly pays for itself

The relatively low extra cost for acquiring such a system is more than outweighed by its enormous savings potential: in the ECE15 measuring cycle, the urban section of the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), reductions in fuel consumption and emissions of around 8% were measured. This cycle comprises a trip of 7 km with 12 stops of 15 seconds each. In actual urban traffic, stopping times can be considerably longer and savings – both in terms of fuel consumption and CO₂ output – can be as much as 15%.
